Heatherwick to design Yorkshire cancer care centre

1 August 2014

Thomas Heatherwick will design Yorkshire's first Maggie's Centre at St James's University Hospital. Set to open in 2016, the care facility will be located among several multi-storey buildings at the infirmary, which is just outside Leeds city centre, and will aim to create a calm, uplifting environment for patients and staff.
Maggie's chief executive Laura Lee said great architecture was "vital" to the care offered by the charity and praised Heatherwick Studio's "inventive approach to design and its ability to truly get the best out of a space".
Thomas Heatherwick regarded the appointment as an honour. "Our role is to make a special place that will support and encourage people affected by cancer and inspire the staff that work with them," he said.
